The Journey with

Dr. Shameka

Rev. Dr. Shameka Cathey

Seeker · Scholar · Minister · Spiritual Companion

I’m Rev.Dr. Shameka Cathey — seeker, scholar, minister, and spiritual companion. For nearly two decades, I’ve worked in the academy, teaching American politics, Black studies, women’s studies, and social justice to undergraduate students. I’ve spent my career centering the voices and experiences of people of historically marginalized by systems of power.

But teaching politics wasn’t my whole calling.

From the time I was a young girl growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, I sensed something deeper moving in me — a presence I knew as Spirit but whose fullness I couldn’t yet name or understand. That presence led me on a decades-long journey through ministry, through seasons of searching and questioning, and slowly, beautifully coming home to myself. I have since answered a deeper call, earned a Master of Divinity, and was ordained in Christian ministry. As my journey continues to unfold I am now launching a teaching ministry rooted in Christian mysticism, New Thought, and metaphysical philosophy. I have recently completed a certificate in Spiritual Direction from Unity Worldwide Spiritual Institute and I am currently in formation as a Unity minister.

The Journey with Dr. Shameka exists because I believe you don’t need to earn your way to God. You don’t need to shrink yourself to be spiritual. You already carry the divine within you, and my work is simply to help you remember that. This is a space for seekers, questioners, and for those beautifully becoming. You are loved exactly as you are. And the journey begins now.

I am a lifelong learner and my spiritual formation is ongoing. It began at the age of 5 with a profession of faith at New Hope Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, and has never stopped expanding.

While I have been formally trained in ministry — holding a Master of Divinity, an ordination in Christian ministry, a certificate in Spiritual Direction from Unity Worldwide Spiritual Institute, and currently in formation as a Unity minister — my most profound spiritual lessons have come from everyday encounters, ordinary moments, and the long, honest work of living a conscious life.

My intellectual and theological formation has been shaped by a rich cloud of witnesses. The prophetic justice tradition of Howard Thurman, bell hooks, James Cone, Cornel West, Kelly Brown Douglas, and Emile Townes grounds my understanding of liberation, dignity, and the sacred worth of every human life. The contemplative and mystical tradition — carried by Rufus Jones, Richard Rohr, Rumi, Robert Brumet, Parker Palmer, and Barbara Holmes — has deepened my interior life and my capacity to companion others in their own.

The New Thought and Unity lineage of Charles Fillmore, Ernest Holmes, Emmet Fox, and Nona Brooks forms the theological backbone of my teaching. The modern spiritual teachers whose voices have shaped my teaching and practice — Iyanla Vanzant, Michael Beckwith, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Caroline Myss — have shown me what it looks like to bring ancient wisdom into contemporary, accessible, transformative form.

I have also been forever shaped by the ministries of Rev. Johnny Coleman, Rev. Mary Thumpkin, Bishop Barbara King, Rev. Ike, and Rev. Sylvia Sumter — whose lives and teaching have modeled what it means to serve with excellence, love, and conviction.

I do not claim to have arrived. I only claim to be on The Journey — committed to continuing to learn, grow, and be formed by every encounter, every sacred text, every teacher, and every soul who crosses my path.
